The cafe stays open just for our group, providing subsidised drinks, plus a delicious range of cakes and other refreshments..

We are a warm and friendly group, guaranteeing confidentiality and care, led by a small team of qualified local volunteers, supported by the NHS.
​
Some of us gather in the comfortable seating at the back of the cafe, where we consider an aspect of mental health or wellbeing.
​Members of the group may connect and share if we wish to, or simply sit quietly and listen.
​
Others sit in the main cafe area for 1:1 conversations, or to relax with table games or activities.
​
There is no charge to join the group or to attend the meetings.

OUR Guidelines

Roots and Rise is an unincorporated Not-For-Profit organisation, with a constitution and policies, available on request as follows : risk management, safeguarding, data protection, health & safety, equality & diversity
wHo WE ARE
Roots and Rise was set up in January 2026, and is led by a group of Shepshed volunteers, supported by the NHS. We have a range of specialisms and qualifications in mental health and wellbeing. We started the group from a passion to help and support those who have their own mental health challenges and/or wish to improve their wellbeing and resilience.

Dave is a qualified and experienced personal and group coach, trained in mental health, mindfulness and wellbeing, with experience of working through his own mental health challenges. He is also a qualified Mental Health First Aider. He is a long-time resident of Shepshed, a member of Forest House Surgery PPG and an active member of the local running club.

Mal has lived in Shepshed for 25 years and loves the great community spirit. She has been a long-time community volunteer with a qualification in both counselling and mental health. She is Chair of Forest House Surgery Patient Group. Having experienced her own life challenges she is very aware of the difference early support can make.
Matt is a recently qualified Counsellor with a passion for the outdoors and the benefits of connecting with nature and other people. Having completed a degree in Psychology, he has worked across the NHS and voluntary sector for the past 15 years in helping roles; supporting people with their mental health and wellbeing. Matt is a keen runner and lover of live music.
